Drone spraying operators

Drone spraying applies herbicides, fungicides and insecticides from the air. It suits steep hill country, wet ground, small or awkward blocks and spot-spraying of weeds like gorse, blackberry and ragwort, where a tractor or helicopter isn’t practical.

Before you book: what to ask and have ready

Before you book: aerial application of agrichemicals from a drone currently needs a CAA Part 102 operator certificate. The Government has announced a planned simpler notification regime, expected from mid-2027. Ask the operator about their CAA certificate, agrichemical training (such as GROWSAFE), insurance, and how they manage spray drift near waterways, neighbours and sensitive crops. Your regional council’s air plan may also have rules for your area.

Useful to have ready: the area in hectares, a farm map or photo, the target weed or crop, and any product you already use.
